Africa-Press – Mauritius. I would like to express our country’s deepest condolences to King Charles III and the family of Queen Elizabeth II, as well as to the Government and people of the United Kingdom for the loss of a remarkable lady who has marked the world’s history throughout her reign.

The Prime Minister, Mr Pravind Kumar Jugnauth, made this statement, today, after signing the Condolence Book at the Westminster House in Floréal, following the demise of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II on 08 September 2022.

Prime Minister Jugnauth also highlighted that the demise of Queen Elizabeth II is a great loss not only for the United Kingdom but also for the whole world.

He commended late Queen Elizabeth II as, according to him, she has carried out her duty with a great sense of responsibility and humility for 70 years. The Prime Minister further emphasised that the Queen was a pillar in the creation of the Commonwealth.

He also recalled that he met Her Majesty at the Commonwealth Summit back in 2018 and how he was impressed by the Queen’s memories of her visit to Mauritius.

Queen Elizabeth II (Elizabeth Alexandra Mary Windsor) was born on 21 April 1926 and passed away at the age of 96 at Balmoral Castle, her Scottish residence.

Upon the death of King George VI, she automatically became the Queen of the United Kingdom on 06 February 1952 at the age of 25, and her reign of more than 70 years is the longest of any British monarch.

At the time of her demise, she was also Queen of 14 other Commonwealth realms, in addition to the United Kingdom. It is recalled that Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and her husband visited Mauritius for three days from 24 to 26 March 1972, as part of a tour of Asia and Africa.

They arrived in Port Louis on the Royal yacht Britannia after visiting the Seychelles. During the visit, the Queen opened the sixth session of the third Mauritius Parliament.
