Promotion of Physical Activity: Inauguration of a Women Wellness Centre in Floreal

Africa-Press – Mauritius. The Floreal Women Wellness Centre was inaugurated, this morning, by the Minister of Gender Equality and Family Welfare, Mrs Kalpana Devi Koonjoo-Shah in the presence of the Deputy Chief Government Whip, Mr Soobeersingh Dhunoo, and the Chairperson of the Mauritius Sports Council (MSC), Mrs Sarah Rawat Currimjee.

In her keynote address, Minister Koonjoo-Shah recalled that Government, having at heart the wellbeing of the population, has shown its commitment towards the overall promotion of mental and physical health and has considered different avenues to improve the nation’s welfare.

To that end, she said, Government is laying emphasis on the importance of promoting physical activity which is a new imperative for public health. According to her, it is necessary that all citizens make use of all the sports infrastructure, activities, sports equipment and other facilities put at their disposal and practice a regular physical activity daily.

She further dwelt on the benefits of keeping fit and encouraged all women, men, youths and senior citizens to be physically active since a physical activity helps one to live longer and prevents many chronic diseases.

Speaking about the Women Wellness Centre, the Minister highlighted that it will be a platform for women to benefit from an array of activities as well as enable them to socialise with other women.

By practicing sports, women and girls can empower themselves to develop their confidence, strength, resilience, team work and character, she added. For his part, Mr Dhunoo underlined the difficulties encountered by the population during the COVID-19 pandemic to practice a physical activity.

He added that with the easing out of restrictions, it is important for all citizens to be physically active so as to stay in good health. He further expressed appreciation for the collaborative efforts of the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family Welfare and the MSC while highlighting that the Floreal Women Wellness Centre will also offer yoga classes as well as talks on several topics.

He encouraged the women to also take advantage of the botanical garden in Curepipe and to organise outdoor activities. He also appealed to the youth to practice a physical activity and encouraged them to walk and to do cycling.

As for the Chairperson of the MSC, Mrs Sarah Rawat Currimjee, she stated that the development of a country goes hand in hand with a healthy population.

While highlighting that Mauritius has a lot of infrastructure and facilities for the practice of sports, she urged women, men and the youth to be active and to practice a sport regularly. The Floreal Women Wellness Centre
