Africa-Press – Mauritius. The Fifth Forum of Accountants organised by the Mauritius Institute of Professional Accountants (MIPA) from 24 August to 25 August 2023, was launched, today, in presence of the Minister of Financial Services and Good Governance, Mr.

Mahen Kumar Seeruttun, at Le Meridien Hotel in Pointe aux Piments. The Chairman of the MIPA, Mr Mohammad Sallah-Ud-Din Surfraz, as well as several other personalities, were also present.

Around 150 experts of the financial and accounting sector are participating in the two-day event which will focus on themes such as Sustainability standards; Anti-Money Laundering and Combating the Financing of Terrorism (AML/CFT); Global business, Cybersecurity; Artificial Intelligence and Automation Technologies; Fintech Growth, and Governance and Performance.

Addressing the participants, Minister Seeruttun, underscored that the Accounting Profession is in constant mutation to keep pace with an ever-changing ecosystem.

Global trends driven by environmental change, technology change, societal change and workforce change are reshaping the future of the accounting profession.

The Forum, he stressed, offers an excellent platform exchange views on how the accounting profession will evolve as it pursues its role in building and protecting economies and organisations in a sustainable global economy.

lifelong learning and Continuous Professional Development have never been so relevant. He remarked that the Code on Corporate Governance will soon be back on the drawing board for review towards integrating and strengthening sustainability in company reporting and corporate governance.

This, he observed, will make the Accountant’s job even tougher and difficult to comply with a more exigent Code. Furthermore, he indicated that the Corporate Governance Scorecard launched last year provides more tangible objectives for accountants be more responsible, accountable and transparent.

The Minister mentioned that the National Committee on Corporate Governance will soon launch the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Charter aimed at promoting a more diverse, equitable and inclusive business community. Accountants will thus be called upon to play an ever increasingly critical role to design and build sustainable oragnisations and economy, he added.

Ensuring ethical practices in the development and deployment of technology is crucial to preserving public trust and confidence in the profession, he said, adding that the MIPA is doing a laudable work in advancing the development of the accounting sector, fostering economic growth and protecting public interest.

“The reputation of our jurisdiction as a trusted International Financial Centre is undoubtedly built on the foundation of a robust financial reporting framework and internationally-recognised accounting and auditing standards’, he stated.

Minister Seeruttun is confident that the MIPA will continue to deliver on its statutory responsibilities effectively and assume an even more challenging regulatory role in the face of demands of the marketplace, ethical challenges, disruptive technologies and new types of reporting.

For his part, Mr Surfraz, indicated that the MIPA is the regulatory body of the Accounting Profession in Mauritius and is engaged in working for an inclusive and sustainable growth. In an era of rapid change and transformation, he stated, the relevance and resilience of the accounting profession are of utmost importance.

He further observed that trust, integrity, transparency, and ethical conduct in the financial realm are the key to promoting responsible business practices the accounting profession.

The Forum, he highlighted, will provide an important platform for reflection, stronger collaboration and enhanced sustainability in the ever-evolving landscape of the sector. Sustainability is a must for businesses and accounting professionals and for shaping the global financial landscape, he added.
