St Pierre Traffic Centre Repair Project to Enhance Safety

What You Need to Know

The St Pierre Traffic Centre is set to undergo urgent repair works to enhance safety and traffic management. The project, estimated at Rs 7.6 million, will address significant infrastructure deterioration and is expected to be completed by July 2026. Public cooperation is requested during the works to minimize disruption.

Africa-Press – Mauritius. A site visit was carried out today at the St Pierre Traffic Centre in line with Government’s ongoing efforts to enhance public infrastructure and ensure road safety. The visit marked the official handing over of the site for the project “Upgrading of Damaged Tarmac at St Pierre Traffic Centre,” reflecting Government’s commitment to addressing infrastructure deterioration.

The Deputy Chief Whip, Mr Govinden Pynivel Venkatasami, was present on the occasion, together with the Chairman of the District Council of Moka, Mr Heerooa Ramnarain. Several stakeholders were also in attendance, namely representatives of the Mauritius Police Force, District Council of Moka, Road Development Authority, National Development Unit, Traffic Management and Road Safety Unit, Bus Owners Cooperative Society of Moka/Flacq, Taxi Owners Association of St-Pierre, as well as the contractor, Square Deal Ltd.

In a statement, Mr Venkatasami underscored that the project consists primarily of urgent repair works rather than an upgrade. He highlighted that the infrastructure has been in use for over 30 years and is now in a highly deteriorated condition. He pointed out that the extent of damage, further aggravated by weather conditions, poses significant safety risks which could potentially lead to accidents if not addressed promptly. Following site assessments carried out in collaboration with technical teams and the concerned Ministry, the need for immediate intervention was confirmed, he added.

The Deputy Chief Whip further indicated that the works, estimated at approximately Rs 7.6 million, will be implemented over a period of three months, with necessary traffic deviations and safety measures put in place to minimise disruption. While acknowledging that some inconvenience and disruption may occur during the execution phase, he stressed that these works are being carried out in the interest of public well-being. On that score, he requested the cooperation of the public, commuters and transport operators to ensure the smooth execution of the works.

Moreover, he reassured that all plants and green spaces affected or removed during the process will be reinstated upon completion of the project. Mr Venkatasami also announced that a separate project for the renovation of public toilet facilities near the St Pierre market, estimated at around Rs 5 million, will also be undertaken for the benefit of the public.

About the project

The project is being implemented, financed, and supervised by the National Development Unit. Works are scheduled to be carried out from end of April 2026, with completion expected by end of July 2026.

The scope of work includes the repair of four identified damaged sections, provision of a new bus exit in Zone A, the setting up of a temporary U-turn facility for taxi cars, as well as the implementation of traffic management measures such as temporary diversions, installation of signages, and securing of work zones.

Once completed, the project is expected to make the traffic centre safer and facilitate the movement of vehicles and buses. Furthermore, the works will provide a stronger and more durable infrastructure, contributing to long-term sustainability and reducing future maintenance costs.

The St Pierre Traffic Centre has been in use for over 30 years, and its infrastructure has significantly deteriorated due to weather conditions and heavy usage. The government’s initiative to repair the traffic centre reflects a broader commitment to improving public infrastructure and ensuring road safety across Mauritius. This project is part of ongoing efforts to address infrastructure challenges in the region, aiming to enhance the overall safety and efficiency of traffic management in the area.
