Africa-Press – Mauritius. The Minister of Commerce and Consumer Protection, Mrs Dorine Chukowry, called on the population to be more cautious when shopping during this festive season and urged them to be more aware of their rights as consumers concerning pricing, payment and scaling.

The Minister made this statement, yesterday, following a site visit at the Legal Metrology Services (LMS) in Bell Village. She also carried out surprise checks in trade premises in the vicinity of Port Louis namely a market, a filling station and a supermarket.

The aim, she stated, was to ensure proper regulation and calibration of weights and measures used in trade so as to safeguard the interests and rights of the consumers against unfair and deceptive practices.

She indicated that a number of contraventions were issued against vendors not respecting the regulations and condemned that the scales of many vendors were not calibrated appropriately.

One of the most common offence, she observed, was non-affixing of prices on displayed products. Minister Chukowry exhorted the vendors to bring their scales to the LMS for proper calibration.

She further informed that spring scales should be calibrated at the LMS each year and as for the electronic ones, calibration should be done every two years.

She stressed on the need for precise measurement system for a win-win situation for both sellers and consumers while reiterating the Ministry’s commitment to continue to carry out checks in trade premises and protect the rights of consumers.
