Africa-Press – Mauritius. Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri visited Mauritius to accelerate preparations for Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam’s upcoming official visit to India. Discussions aimed to optimize the political and diplomatic arrangements, exploring joint initiatives between India and Mauritius. This visit followed a phone conversation between Narendra Modi and Navin Ramgoolam, focusing on the implementation of previously discussed initiatives.
The meeting also reviewed the progress of agreements made during Narendra Modi’s visit to Mauritius in March, including judicial reforms and ongoing projects. Both parties explored new areas of cooperation where India could offer its expertise. Vikram Misri emphasized India’s special attention to Mauritius, highlighting their shared democratic traditions and maritime destiny as central to their relationship.
Both countries expressed confidence in advancing their bilateral relations, emphasizing their shared values, democratic traditions, and maritime destiny. They reaffirmed their commitment to deepening strategic cooperation, with Vikram Misri noting the significance of the Mauritius-UK agreement regarding the Chagos Archipelago within the context of Mauritius’s decolonization. India has consistently supported Mauritius’s efforts to protect its territorial integrity and sovereignty.
The discussions also included the upcoming 9th Indian Ocean Conference in India, set for April, as a key platform for strengthening cooperation and strategic partnerships. Vikram Misri also met with Ritesh Ramful, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration, and International Trade, who acknowledged India’s long-standing support across various sectors.
Finally, in support of Mauritius’s efforts to combat drug trafficking, Vikram Misri presented a donation of anti-narcotics equipment from the Indian government to enhance the police’s operational capabilities. Ritesh Ramful thanked India for the donation, noting its importance for the new National Drug Control Agency (NADC).
