Africa-Press – Mauritius. Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania, and Zimbabwe secured top honours at the WSIS+20 Summit in Geneva, earning global recognition for digital innovation.

The four nations were among 19 winners of the prestigious WSIS Prizes, awarded for projects advancing inclusive and sustainable development through technology.

The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and Swiss Confederation co-hosted the event, commemorating 20 years of the World Summit on the Information Society. Official data shows Nigeria won for its Digital Awareness Programme, bridging ICT gaps in underserved communities. South Africa’s Digitech initiative triumphed in the Enabling Environment category by boosting locally developed solutions.

Zimbabwe’s Usawa Institute claimed the Media prize for “Girls Speak Out,” empowering young women through tech training. Tanzania’s PharmAccess won in E-health for revolutionizing Zanzibar’s healthcare via digital IDs. “Digital IDs are helping us reimagine healthcare delivery,” stated PharmAccess Tanzania lead Dr. Heri Marwa.

ITU Secretary-General Doreen Bogdan-Martin praised the winners as evidence that “technology tailored to local needs transforms societies.” The summit, attended by delegates from 150+ countries, sets new directions for global digital cooperation ahead of a critical UN General Assembly review. Africa’s strong showing signals its growing influence in shaping equitable digital futures amid discussions on AI governance and cybersecurity.
