Africa-Press – Mauritius. The Southern African Development Community (SADC) and the Government of the United States of America are set to engage in discussions aimed at establishing guidelines for their future cooperation.

Taking the stance, Tanzania’s Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation, Ambassador Samwel Shelukindo, led the country’s delegation at the inaugural senior officials’ meeting of the SADC–U. S. Dialogue Forum, held in Antananarivo, Madagascar.

In her opening remarks, SADC Deputy Executive Secretary for Regional Integration, Angeles N’Tumba, stated that this first-of-its-kind meeting would focus on key areas such as peace and security, health, the economy, and the management of natural resources, including energy and minerals.

Representing the U. S. government, Deputy Assistant Secretary for African Affairs at the U. S. Department of State, Ambassador Melanie Higgins, reaffirmed the United States’ commitment to working with SADC, noting that changes in domestic policy would not affect this partnership.

“This is why my delegation and I have come to attend this meeting. We are dedicated to making this cooperation successful,” she pointed out.

Ambassador Higgins further highlighted the United States’ readiness to collaborate with SADC in addressing regional challenges, particularly those impeding the implementation of development projects and efforts to promote peace and security.

The Dialogue Forum serves as a testament to the strong and mutual commitment of both SADC and the United States to fostering sustainable cooperation, enhancing regional integration, and creating economic opportunities for the shared benefit of both parties.
