Africa-Press – Mauritius. Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Mauritius on the conclusion of the historic agreement over the Chagos Archipelago, underscoring the milestone for Mauritius’s sovereignty and the deep, family-like bond between the two countries. He emphasized that India and Mauritius are two nations with a shared dream and destiny, and he commended Navin Ramgoolam and the Mauritian people for reaching this accord.

Modi welcomed Navin Ramgoolam to Kashi, highlighting the city’s symbolic ties to Indian civilization and heritage. He noted that Indian culture and traditions traveled to Mauritius centuries ago and became part of daily life there. Describing the moment as more than a formal visit, he said the meeting signified a spiritual union and reaffirmed that India and Mauritius are not merely partners but a family.

He framed Mauritius as a central pillar of India’s “neighborhood first” policy and the MAHASAGAR vision. Reflecting on March’s national day celebrations, he said India and Mauritius reviewed all areas of cooperation and exchanged views on regional and global issues. Modi warmly congratulated Ramgoolam and the Mauritian people on the Chagos accord, calling it a historic step for Mauritius’s sovereignty and reiterating India’s enduring support for decolonization and full recognition of Mauritius’s sovereignty.

Modi highlighted the partnership’s practical momentum, announcing a series of targeted measures to meet Mauritius’s needs and priorities. He spoke of infrastructure upgrades, job creation, and health-system improvements, including the establishment of the first Jan Aushadhi Kendras outside India in Mauritius; broader cooperation to create an AYUSH center, a 500-bed Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam National Hospital, and a veterinary school/hospital. He also announced support for projects such as the Chagos Marine Protected Area, an air-traffic control tower at Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport, and the expansion of roads and highways, framing these as investments in a shared future. He noted that India’s UPI and RuPay cards now operating in Mauritius would facilitate trade in local currency.

Looking ahead, Modi committed to assisting Mauritius’s energy transition and regional security. He announced plans to supply 100 electric buses (10 already delivered) and unveiled a broader energy-partnership framework. A 17.5 MW floating solar plant at Tamarind Falls was proposed, alongside ongoing cooperation on science and technology. More than 5,000 Mauritian citizens have already received training in India, and 500 officials will be able to upgrade their skills in India, with the first group currently in Mussoorie. In science and technology, the IIT Madras and the Indian Institute of Plantation Management have signed agreements with the University of Mauritius to elevate cooperation in research, education, and innovation. India also reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening the security of Mauritius’s exclusive economic zone and maritime capacity, including cybersecurity cooperation in the Indian Ocean region. Modi closed by paying tribute to the late Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam, the Father of the Nation, whose 125th birth anniversary is celebrated this year.
