Africa-Press – Mauritius. The Nouveau Démocrate (ND) party has announced several initiatives to celebrate International Democracy Day on September 15, with a national essay contest for young people at the center of its plans. Under the evocative theme “The people are the root, democracy is the tree,” the party aims to place youth at the heart of discussions about the country’s democratic future.
Established by the United Nations in 2007, International Democracy Day is intended to remind the world of the importance of defending democratic principles, encouraging citizen participation, and protecting fundamental rights. To reinvigorate this commemoration, Nouveau Démocrate plans to launch a Democracy and Meritocracy Club in collaboration with academics, conduct awareness campaigns, and introduce a citizen dialogue platform.
Kushal Lobine, MP and leader of Nouveau Démocrate, emphasizes that these efforts are meant to raise awareness among Mauritians about the importance of sustaining a vibrant democracy. He adds that his party is deeply committed to democratic values and intends to play an active role in electoral and constitutional reforms.
Lobine also stresses the urgency for the government to fulfill its promises, particularly the establishment of the Constitution Review Commission. He insists that this body, promised months ago, must be set up without delay. He calls for expanded consultations involving civil society and the public on electoral reform, constitutional amendments, safeguarding acquired rights, freedom, justice, and the separation of powers.
In response to the recent summons of journalist Narain Jasodanand by the Cybercrime Unit, Kushal Lobine expressed concern on his Facebook page about the manner in which the operation was conducted. He warned that any attack on freedom of expression poses a direct threat to democracy itself.
