Vivo Energy, representing the Shell brand, is celebrating 120 years of presence in Mauritius, marking a significant milestone for the company as the first oil enterprise to establish itself on the island. A commemorative event was held last week at Château de Labourdonnais, attended by the Minister of Commerce and Consumer Protection, Michael Sik Yuen, and multiple senior executives from the Vivo Energy Group, including CEO Stan Mittelman and Managing Director Fouad Khfifi.
The company’s history in Mauritius began on August 6, 1903, when the ship S.S. Turbo arrived carrying 23 tons of kerosene from Singapore, making Shell the pioneer oil company on the island. Shell opened its first petrol station on Place de l’Immigration in Port Louis in 1956, gradually expanding its services and infrastructure over the decades.
Fouad Khfifi, Managing Director of Vivo Energy Mauritius, emphasized that the 120th anniversary symbolizes Shell’s longstanding commitment and close relationship with its customers. Today, Vivo Energy operates the largest distribution network on the island, with 52 Shell service stations providing a wide range of products and services.
Stan Mittelman, CEO of Vivo Energy, highlighted the brand’s deep roots in the daily lives of Mauritians and its important role in various economic sectors. He noted that Shell stations have evolved beyond fuel stops to become dynamic centers blending technology, quality, and customer service.
During the celebrations, all Shell service stations across Mauritius were decorated under the theme “Shell, 120 years by your side,” reflecting the brand’s enduring partnership with the people of Mauritius and its contribution to the island’s economic development.
