Prime Minister Dr. Navin Ramgoolam received Dr. Christopher Walton, Professor Fabrice Bonnet, and Dr. Faraz Pathan during a courtesy visit on Friday afternoon at the Treasury Building in Port Louis. The meeting took place as part of the official visit of the three medical experts attending the international conference “Addressing the Crisis in Heart, Kidney and Metabolic Disorders,” organized by the Ministry of Health in collaboration with the Hatter Cardiovascular Institute.
Discussions centered on strengthening national strategies for managing diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and clinical research, in line with the government’s commitment to improving healthcare quality in Mauritius. The delegation also explored possible collaborations in areas such as training, academic exchange, and joint research initiatives.
At the conclusion of the meeting, Dr. Christopher Walton, a Consultant Physician in Diabetes and Endocrinology, emphasized the urgent need to enhance diabetes prevention efforts in Mauritius, where nearly 40 percent of adolescents are prediabetic. He advocated for culturally tailored intervention programs, the creation of centers of excellence in health, and the revival of traditional dietary practices to combat the epidemic effectively.
Professor Fabrice Bonnet, a leading specialist in Endocrinology, Diabetology, and Nutrition at the University Hospital of Rennes, highlighted opportunities for training young doctors and nurses in addressing obesity and advancing medical research. He reaffirmed his institution’s readiness to collaborate with Mauritian health authorities on capacity-building projects and evidence-based interventions.
Dr. Faraz Pathan, Director of Cardiovascular Imaging and Heart Research at Nepean Hospital in Sydney, commended the Prime Minister’s vision to improve the nation’s health outcomes by tackling global challenges such as obesity, diabetes, and heart disease. He praised the government’s holistic approach to lifelong patient care, emphasizing cooperation and innovation as key to sustainable health reform in Mauritius.
