Africa-Press – Mauritius. Developments in respiratory medicine were at the centre of discussions during a courtesy call by Professor Kian Fan Chung, Respiratory Physician and Academic at the National Heart and Lung Institute, Imperial College London, on the Prime Minister, Dr Navinchandra Ramgoolam, this afternoon, at the New Treasury Building in Port Louis.

In a statement following the meeting, Professor Chung highlighted that discussions also focused on an agreement which is going to be concluded between Mauritius and the Société de Pneumologie de l’Océan Indien concerning interventional bronchoscopy. According to him, this is a field that has evolved over the last 25 years and which plays a crucial role in the treatment of several respiratory diseases.

Professor Chung observed that the agreement will not only help the Mauritian medical service to perform interventional bronchoscopy but will also involve the purchase of equipment so that respiratory specialists can use this new method of treatment and diagnosis, he pointed out.

Mr Chung is a Professor of Respiratory Medicine, Head of Experimental Medicine Studies, and an Honorary Consultant at the Royal Brompton & Harefield Hospitals. With over 40 years of experience, Professor Chung specialises in chronic airway diseases, focusing on severe asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and chronic cough.
