The Omnicane Award, an Inter-College Project Competition, organised by the Omnicane Foundation and the Ministry of Education, Tertiary Education, Science and Technology, in collaboration with the Media Trust, was officially launched, this morning, at the Media Trust in Port-Louis.

The theme retained for the 2023 Omnicane Award is “This year Mauritius celebrates its 55th year of independence and the Mauritian media commemorates its 250th year of existence.

How will the local media continue fulfilling its mission of being the watchdog of democracy and freedom of information in this digital era within the process of nation building for the Republic of Mauritius?’’

The Secretary of Board of the Media Trust, Mr Ashok Beeharry, the Chief Sustainability Officer of Omnicane, Mr Rajiv Ramlugon, and other personalities were present. In a statement to the press, Mr Beeharry, said that the Media Trust is honoured to be partnering with the Omnicane Foundation for this competition.

The theme of the Award, he pointed out, is directly related to the press and touches on history of the Mauritian press, as well as its challenges and future amid the latest technological advancements.

The 2023 Award, he underlined, will rightly provide the most appropriate platform to sensitise the youth of the role of the media in the country. The Secretary reiterated the full support of the Media Trust for the smooth running and success of the event.

For his part, Mr Ramlugon highlighted that the Omnicane Award is a very important event in the local educational programme. He indicated that the Award was introduced in 1971 under the name Lonhro and has changed names to Illovo and Mon Trésor, and is known as the Onmicane Award for the last 12 years.

The theme, he said, has been rightly chosen, as the Mauritian Press commemorates its 250th years of existence as well as the 55th independence of Mauritius. The competition, he added, will be open to students of Grade 11, 12 and 13 of all colleges with the Republic of Mauritius.

Mr Ramlugon, furthermore, dwelt on the guidelines for the competition and indicated that the closing date for the submission of the projects is 28 April 2023.

The first prize winning team will receive a total cash prize of Rs 100 000 while the second and third prizes stands at Rs 40 000 and Rs 10 000 respectively, he stated.
