35th Convocation Ceremony of UTM: Graduands rewarded with certificates

Africa-Press – Mauritius. A batch of 200 students received their diploma and degree certificates for having successfully completed their respective programmes, yesterday, at the University of Technology Mauritius (UTM) during a graduation ceremony held at the Mahatma Gandhi Institute Auditorium, Moka.

The Minister of Health and Wellness, Dr Kailesh Jagutpal; the President of the Board of Governors of the UTM, Mr Raj Makoond; the Director General of UTM, Dr Dinesh Kumar Hurreeram; and other personalities were present.

The students graduated in various fields including MSc Climate Change, Health and Disaster Management, MSc Mental Health, BSc (Hons) Tourism and Hospitality Management, BA (Hons) Fashion and Textiles, Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery, and Diploma in Bioanalytical Laboratory Technology.

In his address, Minister Jagutpal congratulated the graduands and their families, the management, Heads of Schools and departments and the entire staff of the UTM for their unwavering determination, resilience, and long assiduous work over the years.

The UTM, he underlined, embraces Government’s vision of empowering the youth to become professionals in different fields. ’’In a world that is increasingly faced with health challenges, your knowledge, skills, and expertise are vital to contribute in making Mauritius a knowledge and medical hub,’’ he stated.

Underlying the Governmental measures aimed at fostering an inclusive and holistic approach to education, the Health Minister indicated that Government is investing some Rs 1 billion in setting up the Mauritius Institute of Biotechnology and a manufacturing plant for the local production of vaccines and other pharmaceutical products.

Additionally, the AYUSH Centre of Excellence beside alternative treatment will also offer research in the field of traditional medicine, he said. The graduands have a crucial role to play in shaping a sustainable future of the country by promoting a greener and more resilient Mauritius, he underpinned.

He observed that Government envisions to acquire the ‘Green Destination’ status for Mauritius by 2030 and expressed his optimism that the graduates will contribute towards achieving the set targets.

The programmes offered at the UTM are tailor-made for the Mauritian landscape, such as the MSc Climate Change, Health and Disaster Management and the BSc Sustainable Urban Planning and they are in line with government initiatives to promote sustainable development goals, pointed out the Minister.

As for the Director General of UTM, he expressed gratitude to the staff of the UTM for their commitment to meet the objectives of the organisation. UTM, he stated, aspires to be a leading international recognised university driven by innovation for a sustainable future and has consequently reviewed its mission in line with the strategic plan 2023-2028 to be part of a new phase of development.
