Africa-Press – Mauritius. The Ministry of Health and Wellness and the Mauritius Institute of Health (MIH) held the Award Ceremony for 17 recipients of the National Diploma in Radiation Therapy Technology, and 41 new holders of the National Pharmacy Technician Diploma, this morning, at the Mauritius Institute of Health in Pamplemousses.

The Minister of Health and Wellness, Dr Kailesh Kumar Singh Jagutpal, and other personalities, were present at the event. Both Diplomas are three-year training programmes delivered through the Training Unit of the MIH.

The National Diploma in Radiation Therapy Technology was developed by the MIH with the help of the International Atomic Energy Agency, while the previous two-year Dispenser Training programme was upgraded to a National Pharmacy Technician Diploma.

In his address, the Minister of Health and Wellness congratulated the Awardees for their achievement, especially given the prevailing exceptional context due to the COVID-19 pandemic over the past two years.

He recalled their duty to be compassionate towards patients, reassuring them, and informing them of their respective treatments, thereby establishing a bond of faith between healthcare providers and the public.

The Minister also conveyed his appreciation to the team at the MIH who was able to carry out examinations despite the COVID-19 situation through innovative ways.

He pointed out that innovation should remain a guiding principle in a constantly changing world, as the ability to foresee, adapt and deliver will guarantee success.

According to Dr Jagutpal, the Ministry of Health and Wellness is driven by an earnest endeavour to provide enhanced skills to its personnel which, he deemed, will have a definite and positive impact on the quality of service offered to citizens.

He highlighted the infrastructural developments and technological advancements for the handling of cancer patients in Mauritius. These are namely, the recent coming into operation of the New Cancer Hospital in Solferino, and the finalisation, soon, of the National Cancer Control Programme 2021 – 2025.

The expertise of the new Diploma Holders in Radiation Therapy, he said, will enable the Ministry to pursue its route towards enhanced service and reach the standard expected by the population.

The importance of having a better trained and qualified pool of pharmacy staff was moreover highlighted by the Minister, particularly with the forthcoming creation of a new medical warehouse in Côte d’Or. The Pharmacy section is a crucial pillar of the healthcare continuum, stressed Dr Jagutpal.
