Africa-Press – Mauritius. Shakeel’s Mohamed first Private Notice Question was on law and order this morning. In his answer, the Prime Minister stated that that since 01 January 2023, 6,609 crime cases and 50,922 misdemeanour cases have been reported to the Police. For the same period, 28 cases of drowning have also been reported to the Police.

Pravind Jugnauth added at the end of his answer that Mauritius is “today a much safer place compared to the period under the Labour Party rule”, where there was “the “Regne de la terreur” of the “Escadron de la Mort” which was operating in all impunity because of their proximity with power, a fact which the new Leader of the Opposition is well aware of.”

The leader of the opposition leader pointed out that “the crime rate is alarmingly on an increase”, calling for an independent body to judge the effectiveness of the police.

The Prime Minister then accused him of having a “selective memory”. As comments on Kistnen case were made from the opposition benches, Pravind Jugnauth referred to the Gorah Issac case. He also, at one point in time, made reference to the Kaya case in February 1999.

The Speaker expelled Eshan Juman from the Chamber following further comments.
