Adviser and Head of Human Rights Unit of Commonwealth Secretariat calls on Vice-Prime Minister

Africa-Press – Mauritius. The Adviser and Head of the Human Rights Unit of the Commonwealth Secretariat, Dr Sharvana Haythornthwaite, accompanied with a delegation, paid a courtesy call, this afternoon, on the Vice-Prime Minister and Minister of Education, Tertiary Education, Science and Technology, Mrs Leela Devi Dookun-Luchoomun, at the Government House in Port Louis.

Dr Haythornthwaite in on an official visit to Mauritius in the context of workshops organised by the Human Rights Division of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration and International Trade.

In a statement after the meeting, Dr Haythornthwaite said that discussions with the Vice-Prime Minister focused mainly on the need for more access to information to the youth, the need to empower young girls to attain high level positions, as well as to encourage them to opt for technical areas in their studies.

She lauded the initiative of the Ministry of Education, Tertiary Education, Science and Technology for having introduced the use of iPad and tablet at the primary level so as to facilitate access to technology to young learners.

She expressed confidence that quality education will surely empower the young generation to fulfil their important role in society. Speaking about the workshops, she underlined that the aim was to make young people understand the principles and values ​​of human rights, and increase and enhance youth empowerment and engagement with human rights.

She further indicated that protecting the rights of employees is a very important issue and stressed on the need for the private sector to protect and incorporate human rights within their supply chain.

Dr Haythornthwaite reiterated the Commonwealth Secretariat’s full support to the Mauritian Government as regards the promotion and protection of human rights while adding that they will collaborate further with the Government.
