Africa-Press – Mauritius. Egypt booked their place in the quarter-finals after overcoming a spirited Benin side 3-1 in extra time, following a gripping contest that ended 1-1 at the end of regulation.
The Pharaohs finally broke the deadlock in the 69th minute through a moment of brilliance from Marwan Attia, who rifled a stunning effort from outside the box after being teed up by Mohamed Hany. The goal reflected Egypt’s growing dominance and appeared to put them on course for victory.
However, Benin refused to fold. Ten minutes from time, substitute Jodel Dossou capitalised on a spilled ball from goalkeeper Mohamed El Shenawy, reacting quickest to poke home the equaliser in the 83rd minute and breathe new life into the contest. The goal forced the game into extra time, much to the delight of the Benin supporters.
Egypt wasted little time in regaining control once extra time began. Just seven minutes in, Yasser Ibrahim restored the Pharaohs’ lead, finishing confidently after Marwan Attia turned provider with a well-delivered assist to make it 2-1.
Benin pushed forward bravely in search of another equaliser, throwing bodies forward and testing Egypt’s resolve, but their efforts ultimately went unrewarded. As the clock ticked down, Egypt struck decisively on the counter-attack. In the very last kick of the game, Mohamed Salah put the result beyond doubt, expertly kicking the ball into the net with the outside of his boot to seal a 3-1 victory.
