Africa-Press – Mauritius. Alteo Limited (Ltd) obtained, today, the Bonsucro certification for its commitment to sustainable sugarcane production and processing. It is the second mill which has become Bonsucro Certified in Mauritius.
A certification ceremony was held this afternoon at Alteo’s Club House, in Union Flacq, and was attended by the Attorney General, Minister of Agro-Industry and Food Security, Mr Maneesh Gobin, the Chairperson of Bonsucro, Dr Jean Claude Autrey, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Alteo Ltd, Mr Fabien de Marassé Enouf, and other personalities.
At the outset, in his address, Minister Gobin congratulated Alteo Ltd for reaching this milestone which will help to improving sustainable sugarcane production, processing and trade.
He expressed satisfaction to have a second mill become Bonsucro Certified in Mauritius, which paves the way for sustainable opportunities. The Minister reiterated Government’s commitment to continuously cater for the cane industry through budgetary measures and incentives.
Bonsucro certification is essential, he said, while highlighting the importance of targeting niche markets. Dr Autrey for his part dwelt on the role of Bonsucro in providing initiatives for sustainable production of sugarcane.
He emphasised that a Bonsucro certificate offers a credible and metric certification process to demonstrate commitment to environmental and social sustainability in sugarcane.
On this score, he commended Alteo Ltd for following all procedures to obtain the certification which will contribute in providing an edge to competitiveness on markets.
He called upon Alteo Ltd to share its success story and become an active promoter of sustainability. As for the CEO of Alteo Ltd, he pointed out that the certification is an achievement for the entire team after years of hard work.
He indicated that more sustainable methods have been adopted, health and safety norms have been improved and there has been revision in terms of quantity and quality to obtain the certificate.
The objective is to continue improving the quality of sugarcane, he said. The cane industry is operating smoothly these days, stated Mr Enouf, and commended governmental measures put in place to sustain the sugarcane industry.

It has over 270 members from more than 50 countries to address critical challenges in the sugarcane sector and drive both performance and impact through system of sustainability standards.
Alteo Ltd Alteo Ltd owns and operates the Union Flacq factory facility since 1912, consisting of Alteo Agri Ltd and Alteo Milling Ltd. Alteo Milling Ltd, is the only sugarcane mill still operating in eastern Mauritius.
It functions over seven months yearly, processing an average of 1.5 million tonnes of sugarcane to yield 150,000 tonnes of raw sugar. Of this output, more than 60,000 tonnes are premium raw or “special” sugars – such as Demerara and Muscovado.
