Africa-Press – Mauritius. The Minister of Arts and Cultural Heritage, Mr Avinash Teeluck, met two local artists namely, Mr Jean-Georges Prosper, and Mrs Micheline Virahsawmy, yesterday in appreciation to their contribution in the fields of arts and culture.
On the occasion, cheques were remitted to each artist at their residence in Quatre-Bornes and Rose-Hill. The Minister of Environment, Solid Waste Management and Climate Change, Mr Kavydass Ramano, was also present.
In a statement, Minister Teeluck highlighted that the main objective is to valorise the contribution and legacy that reputed artists have given to the national heritage.
Government, he indicated, is determined to safeguard and promote the history of the country adding that it is also providing assistance to local artists through various schemes and initiatives to recognise their talents and efforts.
Mr Jean-Georges Prosper, aged 88 years, is a well-known Mauritian poet and the writer of the lyrics of the national anthem of Mauritius. He was also the first Director of the Nelson Mandela Centre for African Culture Trust Fund from 1986 to 1993.
As for Mrs Micheline Virahsawmy, she was the cultural advisor at the Nelson Mandela Centre for African Culture Trust Fund from 1995 to 2011. She has marked the Mauritian music as a singer committed to the advancement of women’s rights, and democracy.
