Award of certificates to 19 participants under the “Starting Your Journey in Agriculture” programme

Africa-Press – Mauritius. A third batch of 19 participants received their certificates on 13 December 2022 during a ceremony held at the Regional Training Centre (RTC), in Réduit, after having successfully completed the 260-hour “Starting Your Journey in Agriculture” training programme.

The participants moreover presented their projects on that occasion. The Government-funded training programme is an initiative of the Mauritius Chamber of Agriculture in collaboration with the RTC, as part of the National Training and Reskilling Scheme (NTRS) of the Human Resource Development Council for unemployed persons.

Funding under the NTRS is intended for those individuals who wish to reorient their careers following the difficult period triggered by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The training, spanning a three-month period, consequently aimed at enabling participants to acquire the basic skills, competencies and knowledge required to succeed in the agricultural sector as well as discover the different aspects of local agricultural production so as to take up farming as a livelihood.

The modules proposed under the programme included the following: the farmer; business of agriculture; introduction to soil and plant health; essential plant treatment and management practices; development of an agricultural plot; introduction to irrigation; sheltered farming, protected culture and aquaponics; technology and agriculture 4.0; innovative agricultural practices; introduction to livestock production; and, protecting our local heritage and culture through farming practices.

A fourth group of participants is set to undertake the “Starting Your Journey in Agriculture” training programme which is scheduled for February 2023.
