Bad Weather Allowance: Fishermen community participates actively in the cleaning of beaches and fish landing stations

Africa-Press – Mauritius. The fishermen community is actively participating in the cleaning of beaches and fish landing stations across the island post-cyclone Belal, stated the Minister of Blue Economy, Marine Resources, Fisheries and Shipping, Mr Sudheer Maudhoo, yesterday, at the LIC Building in Port-Louis.

In accordance to new regulations relating to Bad Weather Allowance, he indicated, around 480 newly registered fishers are called upon to give a helping hand in the cleaning of beaches, shorelines, jetties and fish landing stations in their locality.

He pointed out that Bad Weather Allowance is payable to registered fishermen who have not been able to go fishing due to bad weather conditions. Around 2 000 fishers benefit from Bad Weather Allowance of Rs 650 amounting to Rs 150 million annually, he added.

He deplored that Mauritius, besides, being affected by climatic conditions, is also suffering from irresponsible and careless human behaviours resulting in excessive littering and dumping.

This, he said, has been witnessed by the passage of recent cyclone Belal where tons of wastes including plastic bottles and solid wastes have piled up everywhere.

With regard to protecting the marine biodiversity and environment, Minister Maudhoo stressed that the ocean is the source of income for many people especially for fishers. The Ministry, he indicated, provides the fishers with all necessary materials and equipment for the collection of wastes.

He lauded the efforts, dedication and sense of patriotism of the fishermen community for supporting the Government in its vision to promote a cleaner, safer and sustainable environment.
