Rajesh Bhagwan has criticized the recent assembly as a failure, claiming it does not reflect the strong grassroots support for the government alliance. He accuses Paul Bérenger of attempting to divert attention from this support by discrediting the assembly’s delegates, suggesting that Bérenger’s actions are politically motivated to shift focus away from key issues facing the MMM.
Africa-Press – Mauritius. According to Rajesh Bhagwan, the assembly held last Saturday did not meet expectations, describing it as a complete flop on all levels. He notes that this assessment contrasts with the trend observed on the ground, where a large majority of activists appear to support continuing the government program within the alliance for change.
He further states that several regional branches—specifically those of Nos. 1, 2, 4, 8, 10, 11, 12, 17, and 20—have clearly expressed their support for keeping the MMM within this alliance. In his view, this stance reflects the dominant sentiment among the party’s grassroots.
In this context, Rajesh Bhagwan believes that Paul Bérenger’s reaction fits within a strategy aimed at downplaying the impact of what he considers a disappointing turnout. He specifically accuses Bérenger of launching a campaign to discredit the list of delegates, citing irregularities such as the inclusion of deceased or nonexistent individuals.
“If Paul Bérenger had secured a majority in the political committee, he would have found nothing to complain about,” notes the MMM’s Secretary General. He argues that this approach reflects an attempt to divert attention. Going further, he denounces a desire to shift the debate toward personal considerations, at the expense of the political issues concerning the MMM’s future within the government.
The political landscape in Mauritius has been characterized by shifting alliances and grassroots movements, particularly among parties like the MMM. The recent assembly highlighted tensions within the party, as leaders assess their support base and strategize for upcoming political challenges. Historical rivalries, especially between figures like Bhagwan and Bérenger, often shape the discourse within the Mauritian political arena, influencing public perception and party dynamics. Understanding these relationships is crucial for analyzing current political events.
