Africa-Press – Mauritius. BYD delivered the first K6 pure electric semi low-floor bus at Sir Harilall Vaghjee Memorial Hall, Port Louis, Mauritius, officials announced Tuesday.
Operated by the National Transport Cooperation (NTC), the largest local public transport operator, this event also marks BYD’s first official pure electric bus on a Small Island Developing State (SIDS).
The BYD K6 electric bus will be put into operation as a city shuttle bus, transferring passengers and tourists between Metro Express stations, offering a creative zero-emission green public transportation choice for the public.
Mauritius, known as the Eden on Earth, is a mountainous and volcanic Indian Ocean island. To better suit local needs, BYD K6 electric bus applies an advanced in-house powertrain, battery, and integrated EV-specific motor controller technologies, making it a vehicle fine-tuned to the road conditions of Mauritius.
BYD 20-seater K6 electric bus can run up to 225 km with a single charge. Staff can recharge it at photovoltaic power stations. It equips highly humanized facilities like high backrest seats with ergonomic design, integrated safety cameras, USB charging ports, and on-board display screens.
Mauritius Prime Minister Pravind Kumar Jugnauth, , Mr. Alan Ganoo, the Minister of Land Transport and Light Rail, Mr. Kavydass Ramano, the Minister of Environment, and Mr. Rao Ramah, the NTC General Manager, attended a launching ceremony, the company announced.
Jugnauth said the launching of its first electric bus marks a milestone, which will contribute to paving the way for a modern, safe, and environmentally friendly transport system in the country.
The deployment is the next step to further modernize the transport sector in Mauritius and thereby improve the service offered to passengers and is entering a new era of modernity, Ganoo said.
The launch of this electric bus might be a small step for the NTC but is a giant step for the public transport, Ramah said. BYD entered Mauritius in 2019 along with its distributor LEAL Energie Ltd and has become popular among local clients for its T3 all-electric logistics vehicle.
It has established in-depth partnerships with companies in the FMCG distribution sector. BYD electric buses, well established in Europe and USA, have also been widely embraced elsewhere. BYD has vehicles in more than 50 countries and regions.
In the future, BYD will continue supporting environmental protection in Mauritius, providing residents and visitors with an eco-friendly, zero-emission transportation choice, company officials said.
