CAF Approves use of Spidercam Technology for 2025 AFCON

Africa-Press – Mauritius. All nine stadiums that will host the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco will have Spidercam technology installed, according to approval from the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

The cutting-edge aerial camera technology will be utilised for the duration of a tournament for the first time in AFCON history.

The UEFA Champions League and FIFA World Cup are just two of the top international competitions that have previously used the Spidercam system, which is well-known for producing breathtaking aerial images and immersive angles.

Through the use of cables fastened to four elevated locations within the stadium, the Spidercam technology enables a high-definition or 4K broadcast camera to soar freely above the pitch.

Two technicians control it; one handles movement, while the other handles framing. Fiber-optic cables are used to transmit live video. Safety elements like emergency braking systems, anti-collision sensors, and backup motors and power sources are all part of the system.

The National Broadcasting and Television Company (SNRT) successfully implemented the technology during the 2022 FIFA Club World Cup and the 2023 Morocco-Brazil friendly, so its use in Morocco is not wholly new.

For the full-scale installation of Spidercam devices, SNRT opened a public procurement on July 30. The project is expected to cost MAD 9.5 million, or roughly $957,000 USD.

Every one of the nine venues selected for AFCON 2025 will be included in the rollout.

The following venues have been given budgets for Spidercam deployment: Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat (MAD 1.43 million), Olympic Stadium in Rabat (MAD 844,332), Prince Moulay El Hassan Stadium in Rabat (MAD 827,964), El Barid Stadium in Rabat (MAD 658,176), Mohammed V Stadium in Casablanca (MAD 1.37 million), Grand Stadium in Marrakech (MAD 1.21 million), Ibn Batouta Stadium in Tangier (MAD 1.16 million).

On June 9, during the Morocco vs. Benin friendly at the Fez Stadium, a successful full-scale test was carried out.
