Africa-Press – Mauritius. A ceremony marking the celebrations of the 78th anniversary of the foundation of the United Nations (UN) under the theme, Rebuilding Trust and Reigniting Global Solidarity, was held on 24 October 2023, at the Municipal Council of Vacoas-Phoenix.
The Vice-President of the Republic of Mauritius, Mr Marie Cyril Eddy Boissézon; the Representative of the World Health Organisation in Mauritius, Dr Anne Marie Ancia; the Mayor of the Municipal Council of Vacoas-Phoenix, Mr Mike Roy Manfred Mungur; and other personalities were present.
The event was organised by the United Nations Association of Mauritius in collaboration with the Municipal Council of Vacoas-Phoenix to raise awareness on the need for collaborative efforts for the realisation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
In his address, the Vice-President stated that the UN stands as the beacon of hope and unity and that the Day of its creation is celebrated to reflect on the enduring missions of the UN to promote peace and understanding globally as well as to draw attention on urgent international issues such as climate change, poverty, gender equality and other vital topics.
’’The UN is committed to advancing global peace, justice and human rights and the Day of its foundation is essential to recognise that these principles are important for maintaining peace and sustainable development’’, he said.
The Vice-President likewise underlined the remarkable achievements of the UN highlighting that since its creation, the UN has been ceaselessly working to reduce conflict, provide disaster relief and humanitarian aid, and ensure peacekeeping and international unity.
He also attributed the decolonisation of many countries as a major success of the UN. The UN, he underscored, remains the backbone to support countries to fight the wrongs of history and complete the unfinished business of decolonisation including that of the Mauritian territory.
The Vice-President further indicated that Mauritius has benefitted much assistance from the UN in many areas and sectors for the implementation of several projects. They include: green environment, renewable energy, and digitalisation of the public sector and support to vulnerable groups and to SMEs.
For her part, Dr Ancia underlined that the celebrations of the Day provide the opportunity to reflect and take stock of the works undertaken by the UN since its foundation and to address current challenges.
“It is celebrated to reaffirm the purpose and principles of the UN Charter that have been guiding countries over the years to deliver on the common agenda in support of peace and prosperity, and boost actions towards the achievement of the SDGs,” she said. Dr Ancia moreover called on member countries to commit themselves and work collectively for a brighter future and a more resilient world.
