A Digital Financial Inclusion workshop, aimed at promoting the sustainable growth of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in today’s rapidly evolving technological landscape, opened this morning at The Ravenala Attitude Hotel, in Balaclava. The three-day event is organised by the COMESA Business Council (CBC) in collaboration with the Mauritius Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCI).
The President of the Republic of Mauritius, Mr Prithvirajsing Roopun; the President of the COMESA Business Council and Vice-President of the African Business Council, Mr Marday Venkatasamy; the President of the MCCI, Mrs Namita Jagarnath Hardowar; and other personalities were present at the opening ceremony.
In his speech, President Roopun stressed that SMEs must innovate to stay relevant and make sound decisions in the rapidly evolving technological era. For him, Digital Financial Inclusion is a lifeline for businesses, eradicating financial gaps through alternative funding access, and is a visionary step in reshaping the financial landscape.
The President also underscored the vital role of SMEs in driving global economic progress. He emphasised the significance of enhancing global competitiveness and stressed the importance of SMEs embracing digital services to equip them with robust tools to tackle international challenges.
He expressed belief that the adoption of digitalisation, including e-commerce and e-payment systems, would facilitate the growth of SMEs. The President advocated for the exploration of new sectors, substantial investments in vocational training, and the promotion of entrepreneurial education, alongside digitalisation.
He likewise highlighted the transformative potential of collaboration in driving growth and empowerment for SMEs, drawing from Mauritius’ enduring commitment to stakeholders’ cooperation in its economic journey.
Mr Venkatasamy, in his remarks, underlined the remarkable synergy between the CBC and the MCCI, showcasing their joint commitment to empowering SMEs along the path to economic prosperity.
He spoke about the CBC’s crucial role in supporting the business community by addressing global challenges such as climate change, advancing financial inclusion, adopting new technologies, and progressing toward digitalisation. On her part, Mrs Jagarnath Hardowar, declared that SMEs are catalysts for invention, innovation, and the development of new ideas and technologies.
She further highlighted the significant increase in women entrepreneurs in Mauritius, underscoring the need for ongoing support to provide them with access to markets, training, networking opportunities, and prospects in the realm of digital entrepreneurship.
