Africa-Press – Mauritius. The Mauritian team who participated in the 22nd edition of the Commonwealth Games held in Birmingham was welcomed, last evening, by the Minister of Youth Empowerment, Sports and Recreation, Mr Jean Christophe Stephan Toussaint at Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport, Plaine Magnien.
Mauritius won five medals including three Silver with Richarno Colin in Boxing; Roilya Ranaivosoa in Weightlifting; and Rémi Feuillet in Judo; and two Bronze with Christianne Legentil and Sébastien Perrine in Judo.
The Games took place from 28 July to 08 August 2022, featuring thousands of world-class athletes and a global broadcast audience of over a billion people. Australia topped the ranking with a total of 165 medals.
In a statement, Minister Toussaint applauded the athletes for their remarkable performances and for having won five medals for the first time in the Games.
He indicated that he is fully satisfied with the performance of all the athletes. The Commonwealth Games, he stated, sets very high standards in terms of competition and the Mauritian Team has been able to give their best shots.
“It has been a rewarding season for all the preparations and efforts of the athletes and it is with immense pride that we welcome them back”, he said.
The Minister underlined that it is the best performance achieved so far by the Mauritian athletes in the Commonwealth Games. Mauritius, he recalled, had bagged four medals in 1998.
According to him, the level and performance of Mauritian athletes have significantly improved over the years. He also congratulated all the coaches, sports federations, and athletes for their hard work and determination.
