Africa-Press – Mauritius. The Secretary-General of the Commonwealth, Rt Hon Patricia Scotland KC, accompanied by the Adviser and Head (Africa Region), Governance and Peace Directorate of the Commonwealth Secretariat, Ms Abiola Sunmonu, paid a courtesy call on the Attorney General, Minister of Agro-Industry and Food Security, Mr Maneesh Gobin, today, in Port-Louis.
She also met with the Minister of Youth Empowerment, Sports and Recreation, Mr Jean Christophe Stephan Toussaint; and the Minister of Gender Equality and Family Welfare, Mrs Kalpana Devi Koonjoo-Shah. In a statement, the Secretary-General, underscored that the meeting with the Attorney General, was fruitful and cordial.
She indicated that Mauritius hosted the Commonwealth Law Ministers Meeting (CLMM) in November last year during which an ambitious agenda was set out to assist all the fifty-six Member States to deliver a more digitalised, fairer and smarter system for all citizens to have access to justice.
She underlined that the Attorney General will remain the Chair of the CLMM and also the Chair of the Commonwealth Law Minister’s Action Group created last year to implement the recommendations that were proposed.
Discussions also focused on the use of Artificial Intelligence to enable leaders make use of technology and digitalisation in ensuring justice. As for the Sports sector, Rt Hon Patricia Scotland KC, observed that 2023 is for the Commonwealth the year of the Youth. She expressed hope that all the programmes for the young people will help achieve Sustainable Development Goal 17 which is partnership.
“We are making sure that our youth have the opportunity to meet their aspirations and to meet their goals”, she said, adding that they will be in a better position to work together during the Commonwealth Youth Games which will be held in Trinidad and Tobago next month as well as the Youth Ministers’ meetings scheduled in September in London.
It is recalled that the Secretary-General is on an official visit to Mauritius in the context of 66th United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) Commission for Africa Meeting, which will be held from 26 to 28 July 2023.
