Africa-Press – Mauritius. Contracts for the construction of the 12,000 social housing units, as announced in Budget 2020-21, are currently being allocated and work will soon start on the different construction sites earmarked around the island for this project.

The Deputy Prime Minister (DPM), Minister of Housing and Land Use Planning, Minister of Tourism, Mr Louis Steven Obeegadoo, made this announcement, this afternoon, at the inauguration ceremony of Résidence Vetiver at Gros Cailloux.

Several eminent personalities were present at the inauguration ceremony, which was organised by the Ministry of Housing and Land Use Planning in collaboration with the National Housing Development Co Ltd.

DPM Obeegadoo highlighted that since November 2019 to date, some 1,176 housing units, including the 126 at Résidence Vetiver to the tune of some Rs 207,7 million, have already been handed over to beneficiaries.

Each Row type housing unit at Résidence Vetiver comprise two bedrooms, a dining/living room, two bathrooms, and a covered terrace which can be converted into another room on the first floor.

A children’s playground, pétanque court and green spaces have also been put at the disposal of the beneficiaries. Construction works for the 126 housing units were completed in October 2021.

Furthermore, DPM Obeegadoo appealed to those who have already been vaccinated to receive a booster dose at the earliest so as to efficiently mitigate the spread of COVID-19 locally.

He also indicated that, as from next Monday, pregnant women will have the opportunity to be inoculated with the Pfizer vaccine. It is recalled that from July 2021 to June 2024, the NHDC aims at delivering some 3,400 additional social housing units in various regions around Mauritius.
