Africa-Press – Mauritius. Crystal Palace have reached an agreement worth £47 million to sign Sporting Lisbon defender Ousmane Diomande, with the highly rated Ivory Coast international lined up as a potential successor to Marc Guehi.
Diomande, 21, has emerged as one of Europe’s most sought-after young centre-backs, impressing in the Portuguese league with his composure on the ball and physical presence. Palace have moved swiftly to secure his services amid growing interest from other Premier League clubs.
The deal signals Palace’s intent to prepare for the possible departure of Guehi, 24, who is attracting significant interest from several top English sides following another standout season and his inclusion in England’s Euro 2024 squad.
While Guehi’s future remains unresolved, Palace are determined not to be left short in defence and see Diomande as a player capable of stepping straight into the Premier League. Talks over personal terms with Diomande are believed to be at an advanced stage, with the move expected to progress quickly once the defender gives the green light.
Diomande joined Sporting from Danish side FC Midtjylland in January 2023 and has made a rapid rise, becoming a key figure in the squad. His performances in both domestic and European competition have drawn widespread praise and boosted his valuation.
If the transfer is finalised, it would represent a record outlay for Crystal Palace, underlining the club’s ambition to strengthen and remain competitive in the Premier League.
Further developments are anticipated in the coming days as Palace work to complete the deal.
