Africa-Press – Mauritius. A forum focusing on the emblematic character of Ratsitatanina was held, yesterday, at the Intercontinental Slavery Museum (ISM), in Port Louis, to mark the Bicentenary of the execution of Ratsitatanina. The bilateral relations between Mauritius and Madagascar during the period 1820-1822 were also the highlights of the event.
A joint initiative of the ISM, the Amicale Maurice-Madagascar and the Nelson Mandela Centre for African Culture, the forum aimed at promoting the friendly relations and mutual cooperation that exist between the peoples of the Republic of Mauritius and the Republic of Madagascar.
An exhibition on the ‘Bicentenary of the execution of Rasitatanina (1822-2022), a heroic and mythical figure symbolising freedom and the fight against the oppressors’, was also held at the venue.
About the ISM The ISM was converted from the ex-Labourdonnais Military Hospital which is among one of the oldest buildings in Mauritius, and is significant in the history of slavery.
The Museum aims to promote the study of slavery and slave trade in the Indian Ocean; gather, collect and preserve documents and oral history on slavery; create and preserve a catalogue of artefacts related to slavery; host permanent exhibitions and organise regular travelling exhibitions; and promote curricular development and scientific research as well as the production of educational and pedagogical materials.
