Cyclone Freddy: VPM Husnoo announces introduction of post-cyclone Safety Phase

Africa-Press – Mauritius. The National Crisis Committee was convened this afternoon at the seat of the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Centre (NDRRMC) in Port-Louis. The Committee was chaired by the Vice-Prime Minister, Minister of Local Government, Disaster and Risk Management, Dr. Mohammad Anwar Husnoo.

In a statement VPM Husnoo underlined that intense tropical cyclone Freddy is being closely monitored by the Mauritius Meteorological Services and highlighted that a Cyclone Warning Class 1 could be issued tomorrow for Mauritius.

The main aim of the meeting was to take stock of the various measures put in place by concerned stakeholders as Cyclone Freddy is expected to influence the weather in Rodrigues, Mauritius as well as St Brandon, stated Minister Husnoo.

VPM Husnoo underscored that a Safety Phase bulletin will be also be issued to inform the public about post cyclonic conditions. This will concern the states of roads, high waves and swells and post cyclone gusts. He also pointed out that the intensity of Cyclone Freddy can be compared to those of Hollanda and Dina.

Dr Husnoo appealed to the population to abide to instructions issued by the concerned authorities and underlined that the safety of all people is the main concern of Government as Cyclone Freddy is expected to be at 200 kms at its closest point to the country.
