Africa-PressMauritius. As part of a cleaning campaign initiative in Plaine des Papayes, bins were remitted to several families of that region during a ceremony held, today, at Plaine des Papayes Village Council. Around 2500 families have been targeted for this distribution exercise which will be held over the weekend in Plaine des Papayes and its vicinity.
The Minister of Gender Equality and Family Welfare, Mrs Kalpana Devi Koonjoo-Shah, was present at the event which was jointly organised by the Village Council of Plaine des Papayes and the District Council of the North.
Other personalities, including the Parliamentary Private Secretary, Mr Rajanah Dhaliah, and representatives of the Village Council of Plaine des Papayes and the District Council of Pamplemousses, were also present.
In a statement, Minister Koonjoo-Shah spoke about the objective of the initiative and highlighted that around 5000 bins will be offered to some 2500 families, that is, two bins per families. Government, she said, is putting a lot of emphasis on the need to protect the environment to keep our country clean. It is important to start by keeping households clean, and then the village, the society and the country will remain clean, she added.
According to the Minister, the distribution exercise is being carried out in discipline and is respecting all sanitary protocols. Mrs Koonjoo-Shah also appealed to all families receiving bins to make good use of those bins and start by keeping their households clean as well as their immediate environment and to continue protecting the environment.
It is recalled that the cleaning campaign was launched at the beginning of July 2021 in Triolet whereby some 8500 families received bins. The campaign will be ongoing during weekends in the northern part of Mauritius and will cover 18 villages.
The cleaning campaign aims at encouraging citizens to protect and keep the environment clean at all times.
