Africa-Press – Mauritius. The last two batches of Gold Award recipients of the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award-Mauritius were rewarded, yesterday, during a ceremony held at the State House in Réduit, with Gold certificates and badges after having successfully completed the gold level of the programme.

The 62 Gold award recipients come from Droopnath Ramphul State College, Sir Leckraz Teelock State Secondary School, Floreal Youth Centre, Rising Star, St Joseph College, Queen Elizabeth College, Pamplemousses State Secondary School and Rabindranath Tagore Secondary School.

They received their badge from the President of the Republic of Mauritius, Mr Prithvirajsing Roopun, and their Gold certificate from the Minister of Youth Empowerment, Sports and Recreation, Mr Stephan Toussaint.

In his address, President Roopun congratulated the recipients for having completed the programme, as well as all those who were by their side to support them.

“This programme has enabled you to show determination and develop confidence, self-discipline and resilience”, he stated.

The President pointed out that this award ceremony also coincided with the Platinum Jubilee of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and he seized the opportunity to reflect on such an iconic figure.

President Roopun further observed that all the skills and knowledge acquired would serve the awardees in their future endeavours and help them to contribute to the uplifting of the whole Nation.

He also recalled that the world was dynamic and that the youth of today would have to face different challenges in the future. “However, with the contribution of this programme, you will be able to face any situation and fulfil your dreams”, he added.

For his part, Minister Toussaint commended the recipients for the efforts put in so as to successfully complete the Gold level of the programme, despite the trying times resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic.

He also thanked the awardees’ parents as well as the other stakeholders who accompanied them through the programme. He expressed hope that the Gold award recipients would continue to put into practice the physical activity they learned in the programme.

“The country needs you to take various responsibilities that will enable Mauritius to pursue its development as you are our future and are now equipped with the necessary tools to do so”, he concluded. It is recalled that, for the last two years, a total of 183 young persons completed successfully their Gold level in Mauritius.
