Africa-Press – Mauritius. Certificates were remitted, this morning at the MITD House in Phoenix, to 14 educators from the secondary and tertiary education institutions, selected to participate in the Bureau pour l’Enseignement de la Langue et de la Civilisation Françaises (BELC) training scheduled from 11 to 23 July 2022 at the University of Nantes in France.
Among them, four will participate in distance learning classes. The Vice-Prime Minister and Minister of Education, Tertiary Education, Science and Technology, Mrs Leela Devi Dookun-Luchoomun; and the Ambassador of the Republic of France to Mauritius, Mrs Florence Caussé-Tissier, were present at the ceremony.

In her address, Vice-Prime Minister Dookun-Luchoomun recalled that the BELC training lies in the context of the cooperation between Mauritius and France in the education sector.

She further dwelt on the Institut Français de Maurice (IFM) which has marked, since the past 40 years, the cultural and artistic landscape of Mauritius and added that the institution also helps in the promotion of the French language in the region.

Recalling that it is important to continuously train educators, the Vice-Prime Minister stated that the BELC trainings are intensive professional courses focused on four main objectives notably improving instruction, training, evaluation, and classroom management.

She rejoiced that the beneficiaries will be able to enhance their professional development which is a necessary component to support innovative and beneficial teaching.

The training will also keep educators up-to-date on emerging technology tools for the classroom, new resources, and teaching practices that bring a positive impact on language learning, she added.

Mrs Dookun-Luchoomun also lauded the French Embassy for its initiative of proposing to organise a regional BELC in Mauritius in 2023 which will target French educators in the Indian Ocean region, namely Reunion Island, Madagascar, Seychelles, and Comoros Island.

As for the Ambassador of the Republic of France to Mauritius, Mrs Florence Caussé-Tissier, she highlighted that the two weeks’ training in France will be intense and will give participants the opportunity to exchange and build networks with colleagues from across the globe.

She said that they will also participate in an International Cultural Show where they will be called upon to showcase the culture and traditions of Mauritius.

Furthermore, she underlined that the BELC training lies in the context of the cooperation in the education sector between both countries. This cooperation, she pointed out, is dynamic as well as creative and is not limited to the French language.

Speaking about the IFM, Mrs Caussé-Tissier stated that it has recently been renovated and has rearranged its spaces and services. A digital museum is now open and welcomes students who can discover and appreciate, in a virtual format, works of art from the biggest museums in France and the world, as well as concerts and theatre plays.

A modern media library will soon be launched, she said. BELC training Each year, France Education International organises its winter and summer universities – BELC – in France, dedicated to the French language professions in the world.

They are a major event in the continuous development of French language professionals across the world. The BELC offers participants the opportunity to develop their professional practices and to support a dynamic career project.

With a wide range of choices in four areas of the French language profession, namely teaching, evaluation, training and management, the BELC responds to developments in the professional, disciplinary and methodological fields.

In 2021, faced with the COVID-19 pandemic, France Education International innovated by creating the digital BELC. It is a new formula, both intensive and extensive, which offers various forms of distance learning, which seeks to meet the needs, desires and availability of French language professionals around the world.

The programme, designed to respond to the different contexts of the participants, in terms of time zones, online access and learning pace, is proposed in different modalities to choose from. In 2021, 14 French educators from Mauritius benefited from the BELC training.

The BELC winter 2022 was held from 14 to 25 February 2022, on a distance learning mode, and the French Embassy financed the participation of nine educators, two of whom followed a training course and obtained the “TV5Monde Teacher” label.
The BELC will undergo a new transformation in the summer of 2022 and will offer two intensive training formulas: in person (from 11 to 23 July 2022) and by distance learning (from 4 to 29 July 2022). A total of 250 participants from all over the world will attend this year’s BELC Summer 2022 in Nantes.
