Africa-Press – Mauritius. The key features and recommendations of the new Renewable Energy Roadmap 2030 for the electricity sector, in order to achieve the targeted 60 % of renewable energy in our electricity mix by 2030 and key related decisions were the focus of a press conference held by the Minister of Energy and Public Utilities, Mr.
Pierre Lesjongard, this morning, in Port-Louis. At the very outset, the Minister dwelt on the importance of increasing production of renewable energy for both the economic progress of the country and to be resilient in the face of the impacts of climate change and ongoing COVID-19 crisis. In addition, said the Minister, the shift to clean energy production will help protect the planet and preserve the environment. Mr.
Lesjongard indicated that following the announcement in Budget 2021/2022, a review of the Renewable Energy Roadmap 2030 was undertaken to keep it aligned with Government’s agenda to achieve 60 % of our country’s energy needs from green sources by 2030, eliminate coal by the same timeframe and create a new economic growth pole namely the Green Energy to positively impact the economy and boost our GDP.
In this context, the Minister of Energy pointed out that the 2022 review of the Roadmap was finalised by a Technical Committee chaired by the Mauritius Renewable Energy Agency (MARENA) in collaboration with representatives of the Ministry of Energy and Public Utilities, the Central Electricity Board, the Energy Efficiency Management Office, to update the current Roadmap for the Electricity Sector.
The aim of the review has been to oversee the progress of Renewable Energy and to ensure that the targets are achieved by 2030, and that the necessary economic, policy and technical aspects are put in place to enable the transition to a low carbon economy, emphasised the Minister.
Furthermore, he informed that a Round Table on Phasing of Coal, organised by the Mauritius Renewable Energy Agency (MARENA), in collaboration with the British High Commission and the United Nations Development Programme was held , with the objective of bringing on a common platform public and private sectors to discuss on the Government policy to phase out the utilisation of coal in electricity generation by 2030 and to attain 60 percent of renewable energy in the energy mix by the same timeframe.
The Minister also spoke of new projects including the implementation of the floating solar PV project at the Tamarind Falls reservoir, promoting ocean renewable energy production, setting up of solar photovoltaic power plants, promoting the use of electric vehicles by corporate entities, and public charging facilities.
