EU AML/CFT Global Facility: Implementation of effective BO Registers discussed during workshop

Africa-Press – Mauritius. A two-day training workshop focusing on the role of Beneficial Ownership (BO) Registers concluded, today, at the FSC House in Ebène. An initiative of the Ministry of Financial Services and Good Governance, the Registrar of Companies (ROC) and the European Union on Anti-Money Laundering and Countering the Financing of Terrorism (EU AML/CFT Global Facility), the workshop provided an opportunity to exchange experiences as regards the implementation of effective BO Registers.

The Director of ROC, Mrs Prabha Chinien, the Key Expert from the EU AML/CFT Global, Mr Alexandre Taymans, along with other Experts namely, Mr Sébastien Guillaume, and Mr Andrej Leontiev were part of the workshop.

Ms Ljubinka Slavinska intervened via videoconferencing. In her concluding remarks, Mrs Chinien expressed her appreciation with regard to the support and technical expertise provided by the EU AML/CFT Global Facility for the implementation of an effective BO Register.

She highlighted that the country has managed to get through the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) recommendations and technical compliance. She pointed out that the workshop has provided techniques to be used to make the registry more functional and meaningful.

“Law enforcement agencies have shown to us that BO could be a valuable tool in combatting money laundering and offences as regards CFT”, she added.

As for Mr Taymans, he dwelt on the journey undertaken by Mauritius in the listing, delisting and post-delisting process from the FATF grey list and the country’s commitment in the implementation of BO Registers.

He underlined that during the two-day workshop many topics have been covered and looks forward to the continued discussion between Mauritius and EU AML/CFT Global Facility.

In a statement to the Government Information Service, Mr Andrej Leontiev highlighted that this workshop provided a great opportunity for both sides to learn from each other.

The team has shared best practices with Mauritius so that the country can avoid common mistakes, he added. He further pointed out that Mauritius is on the right track and he also acknowledged the progress made by the country. He reiterated his support to Mauritius in this journey adding that in the future Mauritius will help other jurisdictions.
