Exhibition and Award of Certificate Ceremony held to mark International Day of Micro-Small and Medium Enterprises

Africa-Press – Mauritius. An official Award of Certificate ceremony for some 37 participants having successfully completed courses in jewellery design, pastry-making, and aquaponics, was held, yesterday, at the SME Mauritius Ltd in Bel Air, followed by an exhibition of jewellery and pastry products.

These events were organised to kick start activities in the context of the International Day of Micro-Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), which is commemorated annually on 27 June.

The Minister of Industrial Development, SMEs and Cooperatives, Mr Soomilduth Bholah, and other personalities were present on this occasion. In his address, Minister Bholah congratulated the 37 participants who successfully completed their courses in jewellery design, pastry-making, and aquaponics.

He highlighted that SMEs play a major role in the economic development of the country, stimulate growth and innovation, and help reduce unemployment. In Mauritius, SMEs employ around 44% of the national labour force, and represent some 34.9% of Gross Value Added, he pointed out.

Government, he emphasised, is stepping up efforts to promote an entrepreneurial culture in the country, as evidenced by measures announced in budget 2023-2024.

Some key measures include: boosting local production; easing access to finance; access to new technologies; and training and support plans from SME Mauritius Ltd. The objective, underlined Minister Bholah, is to encourage the emergence of SMEs and boost existing businesses.

He thus called on SMEs to take advantage of the facilities being put at their disposal so as to further develop or reinvent themselves, while continuing to significantly contribute to the socio-economic development of the country.
