Africa-Press – Mauritius. The Nelson Mandela Centre for African Culture Trust Fund, under the aegis of the Ministry of Arts and Cultural Heritage, in collaboration with the artist association Action for Artistic Creativity and the National Art Gallery, launched, yesterday in La Tour Koenig, an art exhibition cum sale of some 40 paintings and sculptures to mark World Art Day 2022.

The Minister of Arts and Cultural Heritage, Mr Avinash Teeluck, and other personalities were present at the launching ceremony. In a statement, Minister Teeluck highlighted that his Ministry is organising several activities such as the art exhibition in a bid to enable artists to exhibit their works at Lespas Lar and thus make themselves known to the public and showcase their talent.

The Minister also underscored that it is high time to assess the contribution of artists to the country’s Gross Domestic Product. He pointed out that the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization has already been contacted for a consultant to be sent to Mauritius so as to help the authorities devise means to quantify local artists’ contribution to the economy.

This exercise, he added, will be decisive in order to enable the local arts sector to further develop. World Art Day World Art Day is an international celebration of the fine arts and aims at promoting awareness of creative activity worldwide.

It is celebrated every year on 15 April, which coincides with the birthday of Leonardo Da Vinci, who is considered a symbol of free expression, multiculturalism, tolerance, world peace, and a visionary in the world of arts and other fields.

Each year, World Art Day celebrations help reinforce the links between artistic creations and society, encourage greater awareness of the diversity of artistic expressions and highlight the contribution of artists to sustainable development.
