Africa-Press – Mauritius. About 189 million people in developing countries are affected every year by extreme weather events, according to the report “The Cost of Delaying”, prepared by more than 100 researchers, activists and policymakers.

According to the study, although a proposal was put forward in 1991 to create a mechanism to respond to the costs of climate change in the poorest countries, the richest states have been postponing the allocation of this targeted funding.

Therefore, in the last 31 years, 79 percent of deaths caused by extreme weather events took place in developing countries, where 97 percent of all affected people are also found. The analysis also shows that the number of these phenomena more than doubled in this period, with the number of deaths rising to 676,000.
