Africa-Press – Mauritius. A Fertility Awareness and Couple Consolidation Campaign, an initiative of the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family Welfare and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), was launched, yesterday, at the National Women Development in Phoenix.
As part of the National campaign, billboards will be displayed in 60 Strategic Points from 3 to 9 June 2022. According to studies, in the near future, the country will be facing a situation wherein there will be an increase in the ageing population as compared to the working population.
The prevailing situation related to the decline of fertility rate in Mauritius is seen as a major area of concern. Preliminary data indicates that the family planning programme in Mauritius has been so effective that the fertility trend remains in decline while the country is experiencing an ageing population.
As per statistics, as at 1st July 2021, the proportion of the population aged 65+ accounted for 12.6% of the total population of the country, and by 2053 it is projected to reach 34.3%.
Other statistical projections show that the population growth rate will follow a negative trend as from year 2023 and the total population will decrease by 2053.
