FIFA U-20 World Cup: Africa Teams in Tricky Groups

Africa-Press – Mauritius. Following the official draw in Santiago, Africa’s four representatives at the next FIFA U-20 World Cup Chile 2025 learnt who they would be playing against in the group stage.

South Africa was given a tough assignment in Group E during Thursday night’s draw, coming just after winning their first continental title at the TotalEnergies U-20 Africa Cup of Nations earlier this month.

In what might be one of the most interesting groups in the tournament, the Amajita will take on the European superpowers France, the United States, and New Caledonia.

Nigeria, which has 14 appearances at this level, is Africa’s most experienced country. It was placed in Group F together with Saudi Arabia, Norway, and Colombia.

In an attempt to regain the form that has led them to two finals in the past, the Flying Eagles will be aiming for a deep run.

Egypt and Morocco, both from North Africa, round up the continent’s representatives.

Chile, Japan, and New Zealand, the tournament’s hosts, will be in Group A with Egypt.

Against a strong Chilean team supported at home, the Pharaohs will look to make an early impression.

Morocco, on the other hand, has been drawn to play Brazil, Mexico, and Spain, the three-time champions, in Group C.

The North Africans, who will be relying on the attacking flair and defensive sturdiness that helped them advance to the U-20 AFCON final in Cairo, will face a challenging section.

The 24-team competition will take place in four host cities: Santiago, Rancagua, Talca, and Valparaiso, and it will begin on September 27 and end on October 19.

The four best third-place teams and the top two teams from each group will move on to the knockout stage.

Africans’ attention will now shift to preparations as the best young talent on the continent gets ready to compete internationally.

Group A: Chile, Egypt, Japan, New Zealand

Group B: Korea Republic, Panama, Paraguay, Ukraine

Group C: Brazil, Mexico, Morocco, Spain

Group D: Argentina, Australia, Cuba, Italy

Group E: France, New Caledonia, South Africa, USA

Group F: Colombia, Nigeria, Norway, Saudi Arabia
