Africa-Press – Mauritius. A fitness and wellness activity was held, today, at the Côte d’Or National Sports Complex, to mark the 31st anniversary of the Commission Nationale du Sport Féminin (CNSF), which operates under the aegis of the Ministry of Youth Empowerment, Sports, and Recreation.

This event, coinciding with Breast Cancer Awareness Month, saw the participation of the Minister of Youth Empowerment, Sports and Recreation, Mr Jean Christophe Stephan Toussaint; the Chairperson of Mauritius Sports Council (MSC), Mrs Sarah Rawat-Currimjee; the Chairperson of the CNSF, Mrs Isabelle André; and the Spouse of the Prime Minister, Mrs Kobita Jugnauth.

On that occasion, women coming from all over the island participated in a series of activities proposed by the CNSF, comprising: cycling; walking; aqua gym; taichi and; zumba master classes.

In his address, Minister Toussaint commended the CNSF for promoting sports among women and girls for quite some time now and for driving more female participation in sports activities.

He dwelt on activities and innovations put forward since CNSF’s existence and highlighted that these were accentuated since 2018 when Prime Minister Jugnauth launched the National Sport and Physical Activity Policy.

This Policy, he recalled, aims at fostering a sports culture and promote the practice of regular physical activity among the population. The Minister further underlined that Active Mauritius, implemented by the MSC in 2019, regularly spearheads sports events targeting women in a bid to sensitise them on the benefits of physical activities.

He also seized this opportunity to inform that a twelve-hour run event will take place by the end of November. Minister Toussaint observed that Government, in addition to doing its best to create a healthy nation, requires the efforts of citizens to take care of their health.

He thereby encouraged the women present to fully participate in activities organised for them for their own health benefits. For her part, Mrs André expressed pride regarding the achievement of the CNSF over these 31 years.

According to her, the CNSF has encouraged a great number of women to participate in sports activities. Speaking about Breast Cancer Awareness, she stated that an increase in the number of breast cancer cases has been registered in Mauritius.

She thus insisted on the importance of making the most of screening tests for early detection so that a patient can receive the required treatment in due time.

As for Mrs Jugnauth, she underscored that the CNSF has introduced numerous innovative ideas over the past years. She also recalled the progress made by women from around the island thanks to the CNSF.

Mrs Jugnauth, moreover, underlined that this event has also been organised so as to encourage women to undergo cancer screening, an illness that affects many women in Mauritius.

It is also an opportunity to meet women who have been through these ordeals and who can raise awareness through their own testimonials, she added. About CNSF The CNSF, set up in October 1992, aims at sensitising young girls and women about the benefits of the regular practice of sports activities.

It also provides a series of activities to encourage participation all over the island so as to create awareness and empower women to adopt good practices and a healthy lifestyle.
