Africa-Press – Mauritius. The Minister of Land Transport and Light Rail, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration and International Trade, Mr Alan Ganoo, received at his office, in Port Louis, this afternoon, the Under-Secretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs at the United Nations (UN), Mr Li Junhua.
Mr Li Junhua, is on an official visit to Mauritius in the context of the SAMOA Pathway Meeting of the Atlantic, Indian Ocean and South China Sea (AIS) Small Island Developing States (SIDS) Region. The AIS countries include Cabo Verde, Comoros, Guinea-Bissau, Mauritius, Maldives, Seychelles, São Tomé e Príncipe, and Singapore.
The Conference kicked off yesterday and will, among others, enable the AIS small island nations to meet with international partners so as to review sustainable development progress and propose new partnerships and solutions ahead of the Fourth International Conference on SIDS scheduled in Antigua and Barbuda in 2024.
In a statement following his meeting with the Foreign Affairs Minister, Mr Li Junhua affirmed that discussions focused on the way the international community would facilitate SIDS Members, especially in the AIS region, to address special vulnerabilities like climate change, financing challenges as well as capacity building.
According to the UN Under-Secretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs, the SAMOA Pathway Meeting of the AIS SIDS Region was running smoothly so far, with productive discussions among participants.
“This,” he stated, “reflected the strong commitment of the members in this region and of the Government of Mauritius.”
