Frimpong Joins Liverpool on Long-Term Deal from Leverkusen

Africa-Press – Mauritius. Jeremie Frimpong, a defender for Bayer Leverkusen, has signed a long-term contract with Premier League champions Liverpool, the teams confirmed Friday.

The Dutch international’s contract with Leverkusen was set to expire in 2028, and Liverpool activated a 35 million euro ($39.73 million) release clause for him, according to British media.

Neither club provided financial specifics. Frimpong will take the position of the England defender, who signed a six-year contract with Real Madrid after winning the Premier League, as manager Arne Slot’s first acquisition.

The transfer was confirmed just hours after Trent Alexander-Arnold joined Real Madrid from Liverpool.

“It went quite easy,” the 24-year-old told the club website.

“Liverpool came and said they had interest, and obviously for me it was a no-brainer.

“For me, it was like, ‘Whatever you guys do, just get this done’.”

According to media sources, Frimpong signed a five-year contract and will formally start on June 1.

With 14 goals and 12 assists in all competitions, the right defender, who can also play as a winger, was a vital member of the Leverkusen team that won the German domestic double in 2023–24.

Frimpong made 48 appearances across all competitions for the Bundesliga runners-up this season, with 12 assists and five goals.

Frimpong, a graduate of Manchester City’s academy, left Celtic of Scotland to join Leverkusen in 2021.

Since making his senior team debut in an October 2023 Euro 2024 qualifier against France, he has made 12 appearances for the Netherlands and scored one goal.

“Liverpool fans, I’m going to give my all, my energy, my work-rate and hopefully we can win together, we celebrate together, get everything together,” Frimpong added.

“I’m just excited to be here. Thank you guys for accepting me and I won’t let you guys down and I’ll give you the energy that you guys want.”
