GCE O / A Levels resit exams: registrations deemed premature

As communicated by the Mauritius Examinations Syndicate (MES), online registration for the Cambridge GCE O / A Levels exams, scheduled for October and November for candidates undergoing private examinations, has started on July 12 and will take end on Wednesday July 21. These tests can also be considered as make-up exams for pupils, who have failed in certain subjects of their last exams. If this is the case, actors in the field explain that the MES is doing it too early for the recordings.

Hassam Sakibe Coowar disagrees with the MES way of proceeding. The rector of the privately-owned Mauricia Institute says this year’s registration exercise is premature. “The MES asks students to register for the make-up exams before they receive their results,” he said. “This has never happened before. We encourage students to redo a year and take part in the exams again in 2022. ”

Sooryadanand Meetooa, president of the Education Officers Union, agrees. “A lot of students with high potential (high flyers) take part in these exams, which normally take place in May / June to prepare for their final exams at the end of the year. But there are also candidates who wish to take the exams again in order to improve their results. For this category of students, these exams are an opportunity to catch up. ” So, according to this trade unionist, it would be better to extend the deadline and allow students to register one or two weeks after the results. Asked for a reaction, MES Director Brenda Thanacoody-Soborun could not be reached.
