Africa-Press – Mauritius. The Minister of Gender Equality and Family Welfare, Mrs Kalpana Devi Koonjoo-Shah, received, yesterday afternoon, the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) Resident Representative to Madagascar and Country Director for Comoros, Mauritius and Seychelles, Mr Koffi Kouame, at the seat of her Ministry in Port Louis.
In a statement following the meeting, Minister Koonjoo-Shah expressed satisfaction with regard to the UNFPA’s establishment of a dedicated office in Mauritius while adding that the UNFPA and Mauritius have worked extensively together till date.
She looks forward at enhancing the collaboration by achieving common objectives pertaining to issues such as gender-based violence and its elimination; the causes of low fertility rate in Mauritius; and aspects of women empowerment.
“We share common goals and work together so that we can bring the targeted results”, she said. For his part, the UNFPA Representative pointed out that he had a cordial meeting with the Gender Minister.
Discussions, he highlighted, centered on issues of common interests related to gender equality. Mr Kouame affirmed his commitment to working with the Ministry to ensure that both men and women tap into their full potential. The establishment of the UNFPA office in Mauritius, he said, will enable to continue to support the framework of cooperation with Mauritius.
