Global Peace Index 2025 Shows Declining Global Peace

Africa-Press – Mauritius. The 2025 Global Peace Index (GPI), published by the Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP), reports a continued deterioration in global peacefulness amid a sharp rise in violent conflicts.

According to the GPI, the average level of national peacefulness declined by 0.36% in 2025, marking the sixth consecutive year of global deterioration. The index also reported that country scores have worsened in 13 of the past 17 years and have not shown overall improvement in any year since 2013.

The GPI evaluates 163 countries, covering 99.7% of the global population, using 23 qualitative and quantitative indicators sourced from reputable international datasets, the IEP said.

The index measures the state of peace across three core domains: the level of societal safety and security, the extent of ongoing domestic and international conflicts, and the degree of militarization.

In the country rankings of the GPI, Iceland retained its position as the world’s most peaceful country for the 17th consecutive year.

Ireland followed in second place, supported by low levels of militarization and strong societal security.

New Zealand climbed to third, bolstered by strict gun laws, high social trust, and a strong sense of community.

Austria ranked fourth, continuing to benefit from comprehensive social services and well-functioning public institutions.

Switzerland placed fifth, while Singapore, the most peaceful country in Asia, ranked sixth globally.

The GPI also stated that the world is experiencing a sharp rise in violent conflict, with 59 state-based conflicts recorded in 2023, which is the highest number seen since the end of World War II.
